Pt. 2 – Share the Experience

Last week I threw out Pt. 1 – The Importance of a Leaders Invitation, which started my thoughts on the leadership training Timothy received from Paul.  Today, I want to share what I believe is the most important part of the puzzle.  So many leaders don’t to expand the number of those they are directly impacting because they are worried about what to teach.  True Leadership isn’t verbal anyway! Pt. 1 – The Importance of a Leader’s Invitation

Back in August we had a leadership night here at River Valley Church, and ever since then I have been thinking about the leadership training that Paul passed on to Timothy.  I see three keys to this leadership training that each one of us should constantly be doing in our own lives.  I think it’s important that we are intentional about being involved in all three stages at all times.  Leadership is cyclical and never ending!

Here is the first key… Continue reading “Pt. 1 – The Importance of a Leader’s Invitation”

A Message to Young Leaders

For those of us who are young leaders in the Church ( <-note the big “C” ) there is constantly a temptation to see pastors and leaders who are further down this road than us and want the influence and platform that they have.  There are 2 verses in Exodus that help me bring this urge into perspective and both are found in chapter 33.  The first is verse 13, Moses’ perspective on the huge leadership platform that he was given.  His words to God were, “If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you. Remember that this nation is your people.” (emphasis mine).    Leadership is nothing more that stewarding the influence that God has given you.  Your job is to stay in relationship with God and know is ways. He will give you leadership when you are ready for it and realize its leading HIS people. Continue reading “A Message to Young Leaders”

Action is Understanding

This morning I was reading my bible and came to the short book of Philemon where one small verse jumped off the page at me today.

“I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.” (1:6)

It dawned on me that we see God’s goodness on the other side of our bold actions.  You want to see God move? Step out in faith.  Take action.  Put yourself in a position where God has to show up and you will start to see all the amazing things we have in and through Christ!

Once your faith takes action you will begin to see God work through it.  When you see God work through your actions you will gain a greater understanding of who He is and how good He is!

You Attract What You Are

With Father’s Day right around the corner I want to take the time to point out how “Manly” the bible really is. I know there is a lot of love and grace talk, but there’s also a lot of stuff that would make for one sweet action movie. There’s even a group of guys who were a couple thousand years ahead of their time but would have made for an awesome prequel to “Act of Valor.” Their names… David’s Mighty Men.
You find them in 1 Chronicles 11 and these guys were no joke! Continue reading “You Attract What You Are”

Own It

Over the course of the last few weeks there has been one phrase that has continually popped up in my life. That phrase is “own it.” I know there is a lot of talk about owning up to your mistakes, or taking control and owning the decisions you are making in life to create a future, but its been bigger than that for me. Life, decisions, and mistakes are all important to own, but what would our lives look like if we really took ownership of our commitment to Christ?

Our walk with Christ started with accepting Him, but quickly moved to a mandate to make sure it didn’t just stay with me. He gave a command called the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20) to “Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations.” Can you imagine what our lives would look like if we actually took ownership of that command and made it the center of everything we do?

Don’t be a Loser

Over the course of my life I’ve heard multiple quotes that make me think.  The best comments are the ones that are said in complete innocence.  When someone says something that hits home, but they never knew or intended it to affect your life like it does.  One of those quotes came from my brother a few years back.  We were actually talking about sports franchises and how certain teams have a history of winning that has lasted through time.  Yet others (sometimes in the exact same city and market) have always been losers.  My brother’s comment, which rings true in our personal lives as well, was this…

That’s because most losers focus their time on making excuses rather than finding out what it takes to become winners. Continue reading “Don’t be a Loser”

Inspiration for Excellence

I’m always inspired by church planters whose ministries explode. I think, “what awesome favor they must have with God! What powerful vision they must get every time they seek direction!” And on a more “physical” level, “What personal drive they must have to press on after such a lofty goal!” I look at people from my generation like Craig Groeschel and Steven Furtick and admire what they are accomplishing for the kingdom of God. Yet, although you may never write a book, proclaim the gospel of Jesus in front of thousands, or even deliver a lesson to your small group, we are all called to do our part without ceasing for the kingdom of God.

Today in my devotions, I started the book of 1 Thessalonians and was reminded of what our motivation for life as a Christian should be. It states, “We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 1:3 NIV)” Continue reading “Inspiration for Excellence”
